Swabian Confederation

Georg von Frundsberg was 18 years old when he rode to his first campaign. In the spring of 1492 the „Schwäbische Bund“ (Swabian Confederation) gathered an army in the Lechfeld in order to force Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria-Munich to return the imperial City of Regensburg which the latter claimed for himself.

This campaign came to an end even before it had started, for in view of the numeral superiority of the confederate troops Duke Albrecht was soon ready to give in. However the days in the war camps played an importand role in the life of Georg. Here he first experienced the rank and file of Landsknechts: their colorful and phantastic-grotesque appearance, their early-democratic organization with common assemblies, elected spokesmen and their own system of justice, but also their bad habits like dipsomania, gambling and prostitution.
